Why This Is Awesome: Last year, I considered the possibility of participating in the month-long writing challenge and exercise I've heard about for years called NaNoWriMo. For those who don't know, NaNoWriMo (more easily read as Nanowrimo) stands for National Novel Writing Month. It's goal is to encourage current and would-be authors to commit to and produce that one-great-novel that lives in all of us in one month's time.
Prior to last year, I had never really had any inclination to participating in the challenge as writing for me has largely been a journalistic pursuit. That is, I lean more toward writing in the form of nonfiction -- news articles, magazine and web copy, promotional content, and essays (whether in blog format or another). I never saw myself as having something to say that would fill a novel. For the most part, I don't even enjoy reading novels. Nonfiction has always been my preferred literary escape.
It's not a confidence issue, mind you. For years I've been encouraged by plenty to write a book or two. But I've simply never had any interest -- save the fleeting idea here and there about something really silly. I also felt I should leave that the fiction genre to those who love to write it and read it.
Yet as the Nanowrimo month draws to a close (i.e., November), the idea of pursuing this challenge next Nanowrimo has once again set up shop in a corner of my mind. As I become more settled in to my new places of employment and the concept I have in mind begins to take hold, I hope (and plan) to have my ducks in a row by next year so that I may move forward on this next chapter of my writing life. See what I did there. ;-)
