That Time I Said I Would Revamp My Website

Schlosspark by Andreas Levers

Hi ladies and gents! It's been a long time since my last entry. Four-and-a-half months to be somewhat specific. I won't apologize for my absence because life's too long and excruciating for that. :-) But for those of you still checking in, I will tell you I have finally decided what to do with this amazing space that I've created for myself. And I hope you stick around to enjoy the upcoming change.

As some of you know, I started a new full-time onsite gig here in Indianapolis, and that's essentially what's been keeping me hella busy these past 6 months. I don't love my readers any less, and despite the overabundance of spam on the site lately, I have not abandoned ship. So far, this year has been a complete 180° turn for me compared to last year. My health is still not 100%, but I'm definitely better off now than I was in August 2013.

Well, I'd like my website to reflect that change. Let's face it. This blog was never the beacon that I wanted it to be. That is, it never really showcased my talent and interests because it was trying too hard to be something neutral. In other words, I was miserable in my last job. I desperately needed another, so I had to play nice on the internet so nothing I said or did could be held against me in an interview or new opportunity.

Granted, I'm no Howard Stern or Dr. Laura. I've never set out to shock or j'accuse. But my opinions on the publishing, social media and marketing industries weren't going to be heard unless I behaved that way. And frankly, that's not me. It's also not that interesting for a blogger, in my opinion. Instead, I'd rather write about the things that do incite me. Beautiful, honest and sometimes necessarily inflammatory things. Like ... art.

That's right! As you may have guessed by my multiple deviations from the "freelancers do this, but I prefer this" spiel, I love art and culture. And it's time to stop straddling the line. I was never going to find my voice trying to serve 2 (or at times 3 or 4) audiences. So The Lambent Letter -- and the name may change -- will soon become an arts and culture blog exclusively.

Now, I know what you're thinking. How does that tie in with your work as a freelancer? Well, it does and it doesn't. I'm an egghead by day. There's no escaping that at this point in time. Plus, I'm damn good at it.

But in a perfect world, I would be paid a handsome living wage to tell people about all the wonderful things they're missing in the microcosmic world of the arts.  Our city, our lives and our world is often cluttered with grim and painful news. I can't fix grim. And I can't disguise pain. But I can point out where an artist has turned that pain into something moving, inspirational or just darn right noteworthy.

I want to do that here.

Sooooooo, I know I've said it before, but this site will change. Probably the biggest change I've ever executed on the net, but I believe it's definitely the move I need. In the coming weeks, there'll be more news on things to come. But in the mean time, you'll see me posting more reviews on the local (and perhaps, international) art scene. And there's no better time to kick off this new beat than with the 10th anniversary of the IndyFringe Festival here in the Circle City.

Talk to you soon! :-)
