By far my most popular article for Small Business Bonfire, the tone of 5 Ways to Fail at Redesigning Your Company Website was intentionally ironic and could have easily led to heavy criticism from the website's audience of enterprising business owners. However, as you can see from the numerous comments, most of the readers appreciated my advice and were mildly amused by my tone.
As a content writer and copywriter, you never want to risk alienating your audience with the wrong voice, but you also never want to rest on your laurels and assume that every project must only be approached a certain way. I deviated from my usual tone with this piece, and it resulted in the most positive responses I've ever received for any of the articles I've written for Small Business Bonfire -- the most recent comment is from May 2020, five years after the piece was published.
